Notes from the Studio- March

Welcoming March…

The days are getting lighter and longer, camellias are in full bloom, and I’ve spotted daffodils and crocuses in the garden, It feels as though Spring is really on the way so whilst we wait for its arrival, embrace the early spring florals with these creative ideas for the month…

  • Make your own Brush Lettered wraps for spring florals. These make such lovely gifts for family and friends and are a perfect way to add a handmade touch to a posy. For a small to medium posy, think tulips or a bunch of daffodils, cut your paper to A4 size and work your brush lettering across the paper diagonally to add movement and flow to your design!

  • If you’ve got hellebores in your garden, instead of cutting and popping them in a vase, try floating the heads in a large bowl and displaying them. This one is on my coffee table and means you get to see the beautiful floral heads as they tend to droop over in vases. They also make lovely flowers for pressing…

  • If you want to press flowers this month, you can use a flower press or simply place your flowers on blotting paper and under a pile of books for a few weeks. The blotting paper will help absorb the moisture, just make sure that you leave enough room between each botanical to press flat. One of my favourite ways to display pressed flowers is by arranging them in an alphabet print, have a look at the tutorial I created for Hobbycraft here.

  • Celebrate the Spring Equinox on the 20th of March… the official start of Spring! You could try naturally dyeing your own fabric to lay a table with, making napkins, crafting candles or bringing some of the outside in and creating a seasonal display for your table.
