Notes from the Studio - February

Welcoming February…

As we head into a new month and the last full month of Winter, I thought I’d share a few simple ways to creatively celebrate…

  • Whilst we wait for the arrival of flowers in the garden, why not bring some of the outside in and pot some indoor bulbs? I’ve found Garden centres are the best place to buy them, pot them in your favourite ceramics or if you don’t want the hassle of potting them, then just place them inside the ceramic and add moss to the top to disguise the inside pot.

  • Use up kitchen scraps to make garden birds a tasty treat this winter. You can find plenty of recipes online but I tend to mix 1 part lard/suet to 2 parts dry mixture (bird seed and kitchen scraps) in a large bowl. Once mixed, create a ball and flatten, poking a straw through to create a hole for your string or twine and then leave to set in the fridge overnight.

  • Embrace nature and sustainability to make your own seeded paper ready for spring. Make bundles of mini seeded notelets wrapped in gingham ribbon or a whole botanical stationery set by combining your paper with pressed flowers… I’ve shared a step by step guide

  • There’s lots of nature to be inspired by this month from camellias (my February favourites!) starting to appear, to snowdrops, crocuses and daffodils. On your next walk see what signs of spring you can find!

  • Make heart garlands! These are really simple to make, use a heart craft punch to create your shapes and then glue them back to back with a thin string running through. For mine, I used old cardboard, painting the hearts with spray paint before stringing together but you could use coloured card for a quicker make.
