Seasonal Musings from the Studio - July

After a beautiful Solstice spent at Stonehenge last month, and a few days away exploring Rhodes, I’m back home and ready to embrace the month of July. This month in the studio, I’m mainly working on Christmas crafts, I’m really excited about these commissions & it will be lovely to share them with you later in the year, So I’m really enjoying retreating to my garden in the evenings, where the cosmos have exploded, the roses have had a second wind and the hydrangea is blooming, helping me come back into the rhythm and magic of July after days spent singing holly jolly with baubles in hand.

Sustainable Cardboard Easter Decorations

You may have noticed I quite like a cardboard craft project especially when it can compliment the season or time of celebration. With Easter fast approaching instead of buying anything new to decorate with, try upcycling cardboard and crafting your own Easter Garland or decorations, I think these would look great hanging on an Easter tree and they are the perfect craft for both adults and children to experiment with paint and patterns.

Reflecting on Celebrating Winter

As you may have seen on Instagram, over January I ran Celebrating Winter, A 4-week course embracing the darker days and celebrating nature with creative workshops, ideas, and inspiration. I was delighted to have a few familiar faces returning from the Autumn course and spent early December putting the final touches onto the kit design and excitedly posting them out!

January arrived and saw us come together for our first workshop where we spoke about the words and feelings we had about the month ahead before collectively exploring colour mixing to create swatches in response to the words , gaining confidence in paint mixing but also exploring our own beliefs about feelings and colours.

The days are getting noticeably lighter, we will see an extra hour of light by the end of the month, and fingers crossed we keep enjoying the crisp but sunny days we’ve had in January, it makes such a difference getting outside in the sunshine even with a big coat and gloves on.

The joy of gentle creativity

Creativity doesn’t have to be painting masterpieces, for me it is all about how something makes you feel. Whether that’s creating a colour palette that fills you with joy, arranging flowers, putting on a jazzy outfit, learning something new or simply noticing a beautiful colour combination outside on a walk. Creativity is all about the process and sometimes it’s hard to know where to start, with that in mind in as we ease in to January and a new year I will be practicing more gentle creativity with no expectation but to enjoy the process, its something I’ve been doing over these days between christmas and new year and has helped to remind me how important slowing down and having fun exploring and experimenting is.
